Contrary to what one might think of the so-called " Pachino tomato " , in particular the variants known as " Cherry " and the "cluster " is not born and has always cultivated ( after the introduction of tomatoes in Europe , of course ! ) in the area of Pachino . Here the cultivation of tomatoes in 1925 , but it was normal size tomatoes from which we have always been accustomed to.
It was only in 1989 that an Israeli producer of seeds, Hazera Genetics , produced in Sicily , through its subsidiary , the two varieties known as Naomi and Rita , the latter " in bunches".
The first reception of the new variant was of mistrust, but little by little it asserted itself and have the success that we know. Since the agricultural land of Pachino area is particularly suitable for the cultivation of this variant , it took over the trade name of " Pachino tomatoes " .  Keep in mind that the first seed called Noemi is not long since been discontinued , supplanted by other variants that have since been derived from it .
It is important to note that variants Naomi and Rita and the subsequent variants improvement , being grown in Pachino and surroundings , were obtained with the technique called selective MAS (MAS stands for Marker Assisted Selection, ie a marker -assisted selection ) .  the registration of the PGI " Pachino tomato " does not enter into the merits of course , but merely to ensure that the consumer with that name can be sold only that type of tomatoes that are grown in this zone.
